Summary:

Sergeant/Correctional Officer II provides for the public’s safety by ensuring the continued custody, safety, security and control of arrestees and prisoners committed to the custody of the Department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Assist Correctional Lieutenant in planning, directing, evaluating, and supervising shift operations.

Conduct inspections, reference facility maintenance, sanitations, etc.

Respond to medical emergencies pending the arrival of medical personnel.

Ensure all subordinate officers are performing their duties properly.

Complete security checks of the entire facility are performed.

Make decisions based on current written policies, procedures, and directives.

Comply with directions/orders from senior staff in a timely manner.

Discourage rumors referencing other staff personnel.

Document and follow-up on facility problems, i.e. maintenance, etc.

Investigate incidents involving violations of policy and provide an accurate report of findings.

Instruct/direct subordinate officers to complete duties as required.

Assume responsibility for your actions, regardless of outcome, circumstances, etc.

Perform strenuous and active Riot Formations wearing a gas mask, protective helmet and carrying a riot baton. The activity may be conducted over extended periods of time and involves standing, walking, marching, and running.

Utilize chemical agents at prescribed distance and be exposed to OC without a protective mask. Walk through a contaminated area and feel the full effects of the agent.

Use defensive tactics (Arm/Wrist Locks, Come Along and Disarming Techniques).

Perform C.P.R. and First Aid according to standards for certification – must be able to use full body to give chest compressions and deliver first-aid techniques.

Other physical activity including running and fast walking may be required to meet all the regulations of the Maryland Public Safety Training Commission.

 

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

Department of Corrections. Applicants must be able to comprehend and demonstrate an understanding of Departmental Policies and Procedures.  An oral exam will be conducted.  A documented fitness report including a review of the applicants’ personnel and training files will be prepared.  A six-month probationary period will be established for any newly appointed COII.  A 40-hour Supervisory Training Class, mandated by the Maryland Police Correctional and Training Commission must be successfully completed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Ability to write an accurate report in accordance with established mandates.

Perform strenuous and physically demanding command and control activities while wearing emergency equipment. This activity may be required over extended periods of time and involve standing, walking, marching, running, stretching and crawling.

Employ chemical weapons in confined and open spaces. Withstand exposure to OC spray with and without protective masks.

Use physical self-defense and control tactics including Arm Locks, wrist locks, Come Along and disarming techniques.

Perform CPR and First Aid according to the ASHI standards for Certification – must be able to use full body to give chest compressions and deliver first-aid techniques.

Other physical activities including running and fast walk ng may be required to meet all the regulations of the Maryland Public Safety Training Commission.
