In celebration of the nation’s 250th anniversary, the Talbot County Department of Emergency Services is inviting residents, businesses, and civic organizations to participate in a meaningful way by becoming a $250 sponsor of the annual Lifesaver Marathon.
The $250 sponsorship amount was intentionally selected to honor this milestone anniversary year. More importantly, each $250 donation will fund certification vouchers for 10 community members, helping expand access to lifesaving training across Talbot County.
The Lifesaver Marathon, held annually by the Talbot County Department of Emergency Services, has expanded this year through a new partnership with the Talbot County Health Department and The University of Maryland Medical Center Shock Trauma to offer Certified CPR training, Stop the Bleed instruction, and Narcan education in one comprehensive day focused on preparedness and public safety.
In previous years, participants received high-quality instructional training but did not earn formal certification. This year marks an important enhancement: participants who complete the CPR course will receive official American Red Cross certification which will be valid for two years. The certification includes a required hybrid component, combining an online learning portion with in-person skills instruction. Upon successful completion, each participant will have a nationally recognized credential and the confidence to respond in an emergency.
By supporting certification vouchers, sponsors help remove financial barriers that may prevent residents from receiving training. Every sponsored group of 10 newly certified participants increases the number of neighbors prepared to respond in emergencies such as cardiac arrest, severe bleeding, or opioid overdose.
“The first few minutes of an emergency are critical,” said Rachael Cox, Special Programs Coordinator at Department of Emergency Services. “When someone nearby knows how to act, it can make the difference between life and death. Community sponsorships allow us to train more residents and strengthen our collective readiness.”
This year, the Department’s goal is to break its record for the most certifications completed in a single day. Sponsorships directly support that effort and ensure broader participation throughout the community.
Organizations and individuals who sponsor the Lifesaver Marathon will be recognized as partners in strengthening Talbot County’s emergency preparedness during this historic 250th year.
