EASTON, MD — Talbot County Government and the Talbot County Council proudly recognize National Correctional Officers Week, observed May 3–9, 2026, honoring the men and women who serve in correctional facilities across the country.

During its meeting on May 5, the Talbot County Council issued a proclamation recognizing the essential role correctional officers and employees play in maintaining the safety, security, and daily operations of the Talbot County Detention Center.

Correctional officers are responsible for the custody, care, and supervision of individuals in detention, while also supporting programs such as work release, electronic monitoring, and community service initiatives that extend beyond the facility. Their work, though often unseen, is a critical component of the County’s public safety system.

In recognition of the week, the Talbot County Department of Corrections hosted a staff appreciation luncheon, bringing together correctional officers, County leadership, and community partners to recognize the work being done each day inside the facility.

“This profession comes with challenges that go far beyond what many people realize,” said Joseph Hughes, Director of Corrections. “Our officers are asked to navigate complex situations every day—from increasing mental health needs to unique circumstances within the facility—and they do it with professionalism and a strong commitment to safety. I’m proud of the way our team supports one another and rises to meet those challenges.”

County Manager Clay Stamp emphasized the importance of recognizing correctional staff as part of the broader public safety network.

“Our correctional officers play a vital role in keeping our community safe,” said Stamp. “Their work requires resilience, sound judgment, and a deep sense of responsibility. We are grateful for their service and the professionalism they bring to this demanding role every day.”

Council Vice President Pete Lesher echoed that sentiment.

“We recognize you for this one week of the year, but we know you are there every week of the year—around the clock, keeping this community safe in the way only you can do,” said Lesher. “Thank you for your good work.”

During the luncheon, the Department of Corrections also recognized outstanding service and leadership among its staff. Sergeant Ebony Gould was named Correctional Officer of the Year, and Mr. Jermaine Camper received the Director’s Award of Excellence.

Several staff members were also recognized for recent promotions. Hughes noted that the process continues to grow more competitive each year, reflecting the high level of performance and commitment across the department.

Talbot County is proud to recognize its correctional officers and employees for their continued service and encourages residents to join in expressing appreciation for their contributions to the safety and well-being of the community.
