Talbot County residents gathered on the courthouse lawn on Friday evening, April 25, 2025, for Talbot Day, an event featuring music, historic commentary and community awards celebrating the county’s 364-year history.
This year’s theme, "Talbot Through Time," encouraged residents to reflect on Talbot’s rich past while looking forward to its bright future. The evening featured live music from the Easton High School Jazz Band, led by Talbot County Public Schools Teacher of the Year Lauren Rose, special remarks from County Council Member Keasha Haythe, Easton Mayor Megan Cook, and a keynote address by local historian and educator, Mike Mielke.
Mayor Cook shared heartfelt words of appreciation for the community’s resilience, highlighting how teamwork and commitment to service should be celebrated.
"Separately [the Town of Easton and Talbot County] are both strong organizations, but together we combine to make something truly special. Whether we’re working together on major projects, collaborating on public safety, or even clearing the roads of snow — everything we do together is always in service to our community," stated Mayor Cook. "We are proud of what we have built together — let us carry forward on this path we’ve created and continue to make some history of our own."
In his keynote, Mike Mielke reflected on the enduring spirit of Talbot County and the importance of preserving its legacy for future generations.
“Sometimes we may complain about Talbot County – like increasing traffic and certain places closing up,” said Mielke. “But, we have great schools, the hospital, parks, museums, and an amazing community — so many communities would love to trade places with us."
Mr. Mielke concluded his remarks by reminding the audience that despite the changes, Talbot County remains “the land of pleasant living” — and, in his opinion, it always will be.
The event also included recognition of an outstanding group of Talbot Citizen and Service Award nominees: Carlton “Corky” Greene, Childlene Brooks, Christine Dorset, Daphan Smith, Della Andrew, Doris Dobson, Mary DeShields, Jennifer Stanley, JR Burkhardt, Karla Wieland-Cherry, Kenley Timms, Khalid Kurtom, Lonnelle Green, Nancy Andrew, Raymond Bonner, Sonny Diefenderfer, and Virginia “Ginny” Capute.
“Today, on Talbot Day, we are proud to recognize individuals who exemplify the very best of Talbot County,” said Council Member Keasha Haythe. “These nominees were selected by their peers, friends, family, and neighbors for their generous volunteer contributions. They represent the heart of our community and help make Talbot County a better place to live, work, and visit.”
The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Talbot Citizen and Service Award, to two of the nominees for their contributions to the community:
- Childlene Brooks, recipient of the Lifetime Service Award. Brooks’ name has become synonymous with service in Talbot County. Through her leadership at Brookletts Place - The Talbot County Senior Center, her tireless volunteer work with numerous nonprofits, and her deep involvement in community life, she has guided, mentored, and uplifted generations. Her service has not only filled gaps — it has built bridges, leaving a lasting legacy of civic leadership and community impact.
- Kenley Timms, recipient of the Ripple Effect Award. A Vietnam Veteran and longtime VFW Commander, Timms has built a legacy of action and compassion. From organizing welcome-home parades to helping homeless veterans, supporting first responders, and showing up for those in need, his efforts have inspired others to step forward. His leadership has created ripples of positive change across Talbot County and beyond.
“We are proud to celebrate all of this year’s nominees, who remind us that Talbot County is a stronger, more vibrant place because of the people who care and give back,” said Council President Chuck Callahan. Although unable to attend the ceremony in person, Callahan joined the celebration virtually by watching the live broadcast on Facebook.
Winners of the Talbot Day Poster Contest were also announced, honoring creative artists who captured the spirit of "Talbot Through Time."
“To celebrate Talbot Day, residents were invited to create posters that reflected what, to them, makes Talbot County special,” said Council Member Lynn Mielke. “This year’s theme, ‘Talbot Through Time,’ asked artists to honor our county’s rich history. The winning entries truly captured the beauty, spirit, and story of Talbot County. We are proud to showcase their creativity throughout downtown Easton.”
This year’s poster contest winners included:
- Division III: Toni Wilson, Brianna Johnson, Meyers Hannah, and Leah Bell
- Division I: Maddy Calabro
The evening ended on a sweet note, with cupcakes shared among the crowd to celebrate Talbot County’s 364th birthday.
Talbot Day also kicks off a yearlong celebration leading up to Talbot County’s 365th anniversary in 2026, which coincides with the nation’s celebration of America’s 250th anniversary.
