Cold Weather Safety Tips

Talbot County Emergency Services encourages residents to take the following precautions during periods of extreme cold:

  • Minimize time outdoors, particularly for older adults, young children, and individuals with medical conditions. Check on neighbors, friends, and family members who may be more vulnerable.
  • Pets are also sensitive to extreme cold; ensure pets have warm shelter and limit their time outdoors.
  • Dress in several layers of loose-fitting, lightweight clothing rather than a single heavy layer. Wear hats, gloves, and warm footwear.
  • Be aware of frostbite. If skin becomes numb, waxy, white, or gray, warm the area gently and seek medical attention.
  • Watch for signs of hypothermia, including shivering, confusion, slurred speech, memory loss, and extreme fatigue. Seek medical assistance immediately if symptoms appear.
  • Use caution when heating your home. Follow manufacturer instructions for space heaters, fireplaces, and woodstoves.
  • Be aware of carbon monoxide risks when using fuel-burning appliances. Ensure carbon monoxide detectors are functioning properly.
  • Residents are encouraged to stay informed of weather updates and check on local resources as cold conditions persist.
